If you’ve decided to end your marriage, it’s natural to worry about the impending proceedings. Since family law is complex, it may seem overwhelming to begin the divorce process. Luckily, there are steps you can take to reduce stress, minimize conflict, and increase the chances of securing a favorable divorce settlement. Below are do’s and don’ts of starting the divorce process.

Do:

Seek guidance.

If you and your ex-spouse own considerable assets, it’s wise to seek legal counsel—especially if your ex hires a lawyer. A seasoned family law attorney will protect your best interests at every stage and handle all correspondence on your behalf. They can suggest the best course of action when dividing assets to ensure a smooth divorce process.

Devise a budget.

family lawAs long as the divorce is pending, you should track your finances closely. Until everything has been resolved, you may not have access to certain assets, so devise a budget accordingly, and avoid living above your new means.

Don’t:

Violate court orders.

It may be tempting to violate court orders, especially if you have children and don't agree with the current arrangement; however, doing so could have serious consequences. Unless your children’s health or safety is at risk, you should abide by the visitation schedule that has been ordered. Otherwise, you could be held in contempt of court, which carries various penalties, including large fees.

Post excessively on social media.

Until your divorce has been finalized, consider staying off social media altogether. After all, there is no way to predict how your ex’s attorney might use any given post against you. If staying offline is not an option, avoid posting about the divorce, the kids, or your finances, and update your privacy settings to keep prying eyes at bay.
