When it's well maintained, your deck can be a beautiful and relaxing spot to get some sun and enjoy your yard. Fortunately, with a few simple tips, you can keep your deck in good shape all season long. Here’s a guide to maintaining it.

How to Keep Your Deck in Good Shape

1. Clean It

Start by sweeping any debris off the deck. Next, power-wash it to remove any stains or dirt. If it hasn’t been cleaned in a long time, you should also wipe it down with a cleaning solution. Utilize a paint roller to cover the deck with the solution and then spray it down with water.

2. Check the Fittings

Examine your deck for any loose nails that need to be hammered back in or screws and bolts that should be tightened. If any nails are protruding, replace them. If any boards seem wobbly, check the fastenings and see if there are any splits in the wood. If there are, replace the board with a new one. Initially, it will look larger than the others, but it will shrink over time.

3. Apply a Stain

DecksOnce you’ve checked the fittings, use a paint roller to stain three or four boards at a time. Don’t let the stain puddle; only apply a thin coat. If you want to change your home's aesthetic, choose a new color or finish.

4. Look for Rot

As you're painting, keep an eye out for any damage to the wood. Mold, rot, or insect activity can weaken your deck, leading to issues if these problems aren’t caught early. If any boards are weakening, replace them.
