When it comes to auto maintenance, a sizable portion of the tasks involves changing out fluids. There are many different kinds, each with their own guidelines and requirements. Some should be changed frequently, while others only need to be replaced occasionally. Power steering fluid falls into the latter category. A type of hydraulic fluid, it’s responsible for sending power to the pistons. Although it depends on manufacturers’ recommendations, generally, you don’t need to replace it every time you come in for a tuneup. However, if you notice any of the following issues, it may be time to change it.

Signs Your Power Steering Fluid Should Be Flushed & Replaced

1. Difficulty Steering

Since the fluid is linked to the steering system, if it’s low or has gone bad, it will negatively affect your steering capabilities. You’ll notice it every time you try to move the wheel. It could either feel jerky or give more resistance than usual.

2. Dark Color

tuneupAuto fluids darken as they age. With power steering fluid, when it’s new, it has a reddish hue. If it’s currently dark brown or black, it’s quite old. The way you can check depends on the type of power steering fluid reservoir in the car. Some have a dipstick in the cap while others have a translucent body that allows you to see the level. If you’re unsure about the standard color, ask the auto repair technician during your next tuneup.

3. Strange Noises

If there are any high pitched screeching or squealing noises while you're steering, there’s something wrong. It's likely that the power steering fluid is low. However, issues with the drive belt will also cause squealing sounds. When in doubt, ask a technician about the noises during a tuneup so they can conduct an inspection.
