For most of us, cats and dogs are the first animals to come to mind when we think of pets. However, for some people, exotic animals such as reptiles, rare birds, and even arachnids are the preferred companions of choice. These unconventional pets aren’t without their challenges, as many of these unique species require specialized care from a veterinarian who treats exotic pets. If you have a passion for the unique, here are some of the many exotic animals you can own in some parts of the United States.

5 Exotic Animals You Can Keep as a Pet

 1. Serval

An exotic feline which resembles the cheetah, servals are originally from Africa and are legal in roughly half of all U.S. states. While they can be affectionate companions, they also have ingrained wild instincts such as digging and roaming. In addition to a large outdoor enclosure, they’ll need access to a warm environment year-round. Any veterinarian that treats exotic cats should be able to take care of a serval.

2. Hyacinth Macaw

veterinarianMost parrots require a fair amount of maintenance, and hyacinth macaws are no exception. They require ample training from a young age to minimize the risk of biting. As a highly intelligent breed, they also require frequent stimulation, such as toys and interaction. With the right documentation and legal acquirement, they’re legal in most states. Luckily, most exotic pet veterinarians will treat macaws.

3. Chinchilla

A furry, large-eared member of the rodent family, the chinchilla is legal to own in all 50 states. While they are relatively low maintenance, they do have high energy levels and will need to keep busy. Otherwise, their destructive tendencies may set in at the expense of your home. Many veterinarians accommodating exotic pets can provide care for chinchillas.

4. Capybara

Another member of the rodent family (though quite larger) is the capybara. These social animals tend to prefer company, so if you’re inclined to have one, you might consider getting at least one companion for it. Since they’re semi-aquatic, they’ll need access to water. Select states, including Texas and Pennsylvania, permit capybara ownership.

5. Bearded Dragon

While it may not be quite as exotic as some of the other animals on this list, the bearded dragon is still a unique house pet ideal for anyone considering a reptile. Their calm demeanor makes them a great family pet, but they’ll need plenty of space as they can grow up to two feet in length. They’re legal to own and are sold in many pet stores.
