Warmer temperatures are an everyday occurrence during the summer months when the kids are out of school. Help your child stay cool so that they can get the most enjoyment out of their summer break. Below are a few recommendations on everything from playtime to heating and air.

How to Keep Kids Cool on a Hot Day

1. Restrict Outdoor Time

During the summer, the sun is at its most intense between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Aim to stay indoors during this period and only allow kids to play outside before or after these times.

2. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can occur quickly in the summer heat, especially in children. Keep them well-hydrated by serving up clean, cold water and avoiding sugar- and caffeine-laden drinks that sap the body's water supply. Serve water with fun straws to make it more exciting for the kiddos.

3. Dress Lightly

Dress lightly, in both senses of the word. Don kids in loose, breathable fabrics that encourage airflow and don't trap in heat or sweat. Also, wear light-colored clothing; dark materials absorb more heat and can make it difficult to cool down.

4. Turn On the ACheating and air

Summer is the perfect time to take full advantage of your home's heating and air system. Use the air conditioner as needed throughout the day, and let the kids relax in the cool comfort of home. An easy rule of thumb is to set your heating and air unit to 78 degrees so that the AC automatically engages at this temperature.
