If you’re considering getting dental implants to replace missing teeth, knowing what to expect from the procedure can ease anxieties and help the process run smoother. In many cases, patients need bone grafting surgery before getting the implant to ensure the artificial tooth is successful. Here’s what you should know about the procedure.

What Are Dental Implants?

When you lose an adult tooth, either due to gum disease, decay, or facial trauma, other teeth can move out of alignment and into the empty space if the gap isn’t filled. A dental implant fills the space with a permanent false tooth, restoring a natural-looking smile and preventing tooth migration. The surgery for an implant involves removing any remaining tooth left in the socket and securing a titanium post to your jaw bone. Once that’s healed, it will be topped with a custom-made crown that matches the appearance of your other teeth. A dental implant is a low-maintenance, long-lasting solution when it’s installed properly.

When Does One Need a Bone Graft?

Some adults’ jaws are either too weak or too thin to allow adequate integration of the post into the bone, which is when bone grafting will be recommended. The graft will need to heal completely before the titanium post can be implanted, and then you’ll need to wait for that to heal before the artificial tooth is applied to it.

What Happens During a Bone Graft?

You’ll have a discussion with your dentist about which grafting material is best suited for your needs. There are two main options: real bone tissue harvested from elsewhere in your body or a synthetic bone material that serves the same function. For the procedure, you’ll receive local anesthetic or general anesthesia to prevent any discomfort. A small incision will be made in your gum to gain access to your jaw bone, and the graft material will be applied to the site. The incision is then closed, and you’ll need to wait several months for it to heal completely before the post is implanted. You may experience mild discomfort or swelling for a few days after the procedure, and your dentist will give you a set of aftercare instructions to follow, such as icing your cheek, gently brushing with warm water, and eating soft food.
