When you hear about breast cancer, your first thought may be a woman. However, cancer can occur in the breast tissue of men, too, and since it’s not as commonly discussed, it’s important to educate yourself on the types, symptoms, and prevention methods. Here’s what you need to know.

Types & Symptoms of Male Breast Cancer

Cancer is classified by its origin in the body, the type of cell it started with, and how it spreads or grows. There are numerous types of cancer that occur in male breast tissue, but the most common type is carcinoma, which forms in epithelial cells — often in the ducts or glands. Less common male breast cancers include tumors that start in fat, muscle, or connective cells, and some tumors can be combinations of different types, affecting various tissues.

It’s important that you perform self-checks at home and watch for changes in your breasts, and if you notice anything unusual — such as a lump — contact your physician. Not all lumps or symptoms are cancerous, but it will take a biopsy to analyze the cells and determine whether they’re benign or malignant.

Prevention

breast cancerManaging your risk level is a critical part of prevention. Certain risk factors can’t be avoided — such as family history, age, genetic mutations, and diseases — but others, such as high alcohol consumption and being overweight, can be managed. If your risk level is high, your physician will recommend regular cancer screening appointments, as the earlier a lump is detected, the better your prognosis. Screenings for men involve ultrasound or other diagnostic imaging, but not usually mammograms due to the lack of tissue.
