3 Types of Welding You Should Know About, Anchorage, Alaska

Welding is the process of affixing metal pieces together, typically using electricity and extreme heat to melt the metal before hammering the pieces together. It’s used in a variety of applications, including industrial and commercial construction settings. Different techniques are used for different kinds of metals and projects. Here’s what you should know about the three most commonly-used types.

The Main Types of Welding Explained

1. TIG

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding uses a tungsten electrode to transfer electricity to the metal. The power generates heat for a high-quality weld. The technique is known for its exceptional results, even with thin metal pieces. It can be used to weld aluminum, titanium, or copper. This method is particularly useful for challenging projects, such as creating round shapes.

2. MIG

weldingGas Metal Arc Welding, also known as GMAW or MIG, is the most frequently used type. It uses electricity to melt and bond pieces of metal. It is the easiest to learn and can be used in residential and industrial applications. It’s best for projects involving carbon steel, aluminum, and other alloys. Many assembly lines utilize this method because it involves using an arc of electricity to create a short circuit between the wire-fed welding gun and metal.

3. SMAW

Shielded Metal Arc welding (SMAW) involves joining two pieces of metal using a flux-covered electrode, or welding rod, that acts as a bridge for electricity. Energy travels through the tool and produces intense heat that melts the rod and the metal on either side. This method is cost-effective and can be used on dirty or corroded metal, unlike other techniques, such as TIG, which require clean metal.
