When your car is leaking, it’s clear that there’s been some type of damage or deterioration, but the exact source of the issue isn’t as apparent. One cheat sheet for identifying what type of auto repair you’ll need is by becoming familiar with what the color of the leakage means. Here’s a guide to some of the most common colors you may see.

What Various Colored Leaks Mean for Your Car

1. Brown

If you detect brown liquid, one of the primary suspects is motor oil, which tends to get darker as it degrades and takes on grime. It could also be brake fluid, which is brown to begin with. Pay attention to where the liquid is dripping from; if it is near the engine, it is likely oil, while puddles near the wheels may indicate a damaged brake line.

Pooling blue liquid is usually from your windshield wipers. The substance can deteriorate the tank over time. You’ll likely need an to fix or replace the wiper system.

3. Red & Pink

Reddish or pink liquid usually comes from your transmission or power steering system. Transmission fluid leaks when a seal breaks down, which can happen after enough years of pressure. Auto repairs should be able to restore the seal. If the liquid is from your power steering, a mechanic may need to replace the hoses to ensure proper transfer of fluid.

4. Green

A green liquid is an indicator that your engine’s antifreeze is escaping. A leak tends to happen if you choose a fluid not suited or recommended for your engine or if one of the transfer hoses has run down.
