During your next eye exam, you might need to get your eyes dilated. The eye doctor will use drops to open the pupil. This allows them to see inside of your eye to check the retina and optic nerve. While dilation is a critical part of the exam, you will be more sensitive to light while the pupils shrink back to their normal size. These tips will help you stay comfortable after dilation.

How to Feel More Comfortable After Eye Dilation

1. Schedule a Ride

While the eye doctor may give you the clear to drive after the exam, you might feel uncomfortable doing so. Glares and bright sunlight can make it difficult to comfortably drive. If possible, ask a friend or family member to pick you up from the eye exam, so you won’t have to worry about driving at all.

2. Take the Day Off

3. Wear Your Sunglasses

To prevent the sun and indoor lighting from irritating your eyes, keep your sunglasses on until your pupils shrink down. You might bring sunglasses with you to the appointment, but the eye doctor can provide some disposable shades for you to wear as well.

4. Watch Your Symptoms

Any discomfort and sensitivity to light should go away after four to six hours, as the effects of the drops wear off. However, be sure to call the eye doctor if these symptoms last longer or are severe. They’ll want to see you back in their office to check for complications.
