Vinyl records offer clean, warm sound and undeniable retro appeal. Whether you're a serious vinyl collector or a beginner with only a few albums by your favorite artists, proper care is essential to maintaining the longevity and quality of records. How LPs are kept when you’re not listening to them is almost as important as how you handle them on the turntable. Here are three tips to keep in mind when storing your collection.

How to Store Vinyl Records

1. Use Protective Sleeves

A record should never be placed into an album cover or on a shelf without a protective sleeve. Most LPs are packaged with their own sleeves, which safeguard the vinyl from bits of dirt and debris that can scratch the surface and mar the playing quality. Paper or plastic sleeves are both effective. Be sure to check them periodically to make certain the sleeves are clean, without yellowing or damage, and free of mold and mildew.

2. Keep Them in a Cool, Dry Place

Vinyl records are sensitive to the temperature and humidity conditions in which they're stored. Place them in an area out of direct sunlight and away from heating sources and vents. A consistent temperature between 65 and 70 degrees is best. Aim to keep humidity below 50%.

3. Store Them Upright

This pressure can cause warping, buckling, and scratches. Store them vertically—without packing them in so tightly that they have no breathing room.

These pointers will help guarantee a long and healthy life and sound for your vinyl records.
