The start of your pregnancy is an important time to check the health of the fetus. As you plan your announcement and get used to your body’s changes, you will also need to acclimate to prenatal appointments, including pregnancy ultrasounds. Here is a quick overview of these imaging tests.

A Guide to Prenatal Ultrasounds

How Do You Prepare?

Your doctor may give specific instructions for getting ready for your ultrasound. However, the preparation is generally standard. Drink 38 ounces of water two hours before the imaging appointment and discontinue drinking water an hour prior to the appointment. This keeps your bladder full and allows for a better view of your uterus and the fetus. Avoid urinating before, so you don’t empty the bladder. If you have any questions for the technician or the doctor, bring a list with you.

What Are the Different Types?

ultrasoundThere are several types of imaging tests that doctors will recommend during pregnancy. You will likely undergo a standard ultrasound during the first appointment, in which the technician will move a transducer over the abdomen to view the baby. This is used to check the baby’s development. They may also perform a transvaginal scan during the first trimester. During the procedure, the technician will use a transducer to view the uterus from different angles. If the radiologist suspects any chest issues, they may recommend a fetal echocardiography to closely check the baby’s heart.

What Happens During the Ultrasound?

The appointments generally take about one hour. Once you arrive, you will lie on an exam bed. The technician will move your shirt, so it’s above your abdomen and apply a gel to the skin. It may feel cold, but it will not stain. They will then move a transducer over the abdomen, and you will see sonogram images on a screen. The technician will show you where the baby is and print photos for you to take home. These images will be used to monitor your pregnancy and the baby’s development over time.
