A Guide to Pool Liners, Fishkill, New York

With summer just around the corner, you may be thinking about finally investing in a swimming pool. However, if you’ve never purchased a pool before, you may be surprised to learn that about all the different types available to purchase. In addition to pools made of fiberglass and concrete, you can also purchase a swimming pool with a vinyl liner. While all three types of pools will undoubtedly provide many hours of summer fun, options that include pool liners offer several distinct advantages.

What are Pool Liners?

Unlike concrete pools, which are lined with plaster, a pool with a liner uses a thin layer of vinyl that . Pool liners are locked to the pool along the top edge and they’re supported with galvanized steel or thermoplastic to prevent bowing of the sidewalls. You can customize your liner with different colors or patterns. These liners need replacement periodically, as they do become brittle over time. The typical lifespan of a pool liner is between 7 and 10 years.

Pros and Cons

Pool LinerPool liners are a popular choice in environments with drastic temperature changes. They hold up well against the freezing and thawing cycles of the seasons because they allow for movement. Additionally, vinyl liner pools are cheaper than concrete and fiberglass versions. Whereas a concrete pool can take 3 to 4 weeks to build, a vinyl liner pool of the same size only takes two weeks or so, and it generally costs 30% to 50% less.

The main disadvantage to pool liners is the frequency at which they must be replaced. While initial costs for constructing and installing a vinyl liner pool are lower than those of their fiberglass or concrete cousins, pool liners can potentially cost you more through eventual replacements and repairs.

Care and Maintenance

When it comes to cleaning your pool liner, it’s important to not drain the pool first. The weight of the water helps to secure the liner, without the added pressure you risk inadvertently damaging it. To remove oils that inevitable wind up in the water from sweat and sunscreen, toss a tennis ball into your pool. While this may seem odd, the ball helps absorb these oils. Clean debris out of the pool with a skimmer or pool vacuum. You’ll need to also stay on top of the pH balance of the water in your pool. If the water is too acidic it can cause the liner to become brittle, if the pH is too low it can lead to scale buildup. For issues such as tears, leaks, and any other serious damage, call a pool specialist for repairs.
