From trimming trees to cutting firewood, chainsaws are incredibly helpful in a variety of situations. But, they can be dangerous if they’re operated incorrectly. Fortunately, taking a few precautionary steps reduces the risk of injury to yourself and others. Follow these tips to effectively and safely use this piece of power equipment.

Do:

Hold the saw firmly with both hands.

Even the smallest chainsaw packs a punch, and if the blade hits a knot or tough spot, it can kick back. For that reason, both hands are required to maintain control of the tool. Place your non-dominant hand on the front handle and the dominant one on the rear handle — this is usually where the power control is.

Stand to one side while cutting.

chainsawsMany users feel safe with the blade of the machine directly in front of them. However, this position puts you at risk for serious injury. If the chain snaps, it'll continue to follow the same direction of motion, which leads it behind the machine. By standing to the side of it, you reduce your risk of getting hit.

Do:

Wear safety gear.

Always wear chaps and a helmet system with face protection.  Also, wear safety glasses to safeguard your eyes.  Hearing protection is also a good idea to protect your ears.  And gloves are also a must in order to better grip the handle.

Don't:

Move while the saw is running.

Choosing to move or alter your position while using a chainsaw increases the chance of slipping and accidentally cutting yourself. Secure a strong footing before operating the machine and maintain that posture throughout the duration of use. If you need to switch positions, wait until the chain has stopped moving and the saw is powered off.

Don't:

Cut above shoulder height.

Raising the tool higher than your shoulders throws off the weight distribution, making it easier to lose your balance. The higher position also puts your head at risk for injury if the machine kicks back or the chain breaks off. If high up cuts are needed, utilize the proper equipment, like a bucket truck, to elevate you to a safe height.
