From supplying water to maintaining cleanliness, an efficient plumbing system keeps a home working smoothly. When there is an issue with it, daily life can be disrupted, and you may need costly repairs. As a result, it’s essential to regularly maintain the system. Here are a few tips to get started.

How to Care for Your Plumbing System

1. Avoid Liquid Drain Cleaners

Liquid cleaners are sometimes thought of as miracle cures for clogged drains. While they may work in a pinch, they can actually do more harm than good. The chemicals, such as Hydrochloric acid, used are strong and can damage your pipes. Also, they can be toxic and cause irritation, even if you only breathe in a small amount. Rather than using a liquid cleaner, have a plumber snake the drain to fix clogs.

2. Reduce Water Pressure

plumbingHigh water pressure puts stress on the interior of the pipes, causing them to erode and break down faster. To maintain the functionality and longevity of your plumbing, you need to reduce it. Measure the current pressure by turning off the water supply at the main shutoff valve, then attach a gauge to the nearby spigot. After, twist the valve counterclockwise and read the gauge. It should be between 40 and 70 psi (this is the common unit used to measure water pressure). If it's too high, consult a plumber about installing a pressure-reducing valve.

3. Prevent Hard Water

Hard water contains corrosive minerals that can damage pipes. It can also leave permanent stains and rings around sinks and bathtubs and inside toilet bowls. To prevent this issue, install a water softener. This device removes damaging ions from household water by replacing them with sodium ions. The investment will save you money on pipe and plumbing repairs down the road.
