Unlike auto insurance, motorcycle insurance is not legally required in the state of Montana.  However, you are still responsible for any damages or injuries you cause in an accident. Grachek Insurance recommends anyone riding a motorcycle buy coverage. It must meet the same minimum coverage amounts that automobiles need to comply with the law. If you’re not sure what motorcycle coverage includes, below is an introduction to motorcycle insurance in the Treasure State.  It is important to note that if you leave Montana, all adjoining states do require minimum coverage.

A Beginner's Guide to Motorcycle Insurance in Montana

1. Minimum Amounts

Montana is one of three states that do not require motorcycle insurance coverage. However, if you decide to buy coverage, it must comply with the minimum amounts required of automobiles. In other words, it must contain bodily injury liability coverage of $25,000 per injured person, with a $50,000 per-accident maximum. It must also include $20,000 of property damage liability coverage. Note that these amounts do not pay for injuries to you or damages to your bike, but only for injuries and damages you cause to others.

2. Recommended Amounts

motorcycle insuranceTo protect yourself, passengers, and your bike purchase collision, comprehensive, and medical payments coverage, in addition to liability coverage. The first pays for damages caused during collisions with other motorists or stationary objects. Comprehensive pays for non-collision losses, including those caused by fire, flood, vandalism, or theft. Medical payments coverage pays for medical treatments for you or your passenger.

3. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists

Finally, you should seriously consider uninsured motorist coverage. It pays for damages caused by motorists who either have no insurance or whose limits are not high enough to cover your losses. Without it, you could pay out of pocket if you suffer injuries or property damage by someone who is not properly insured.
