You use your light switches every day, often dozens of times. When they're worn out or incorrectly wired, they can become a daily annoyance at best, or dangerous at worst. Faulty wiring in switches put your home at risk for an electrical fire, one of the leading causes of residential fires in the country. Understanding the red flags can help you know when to schedule electrical repairs to keep your home safe. Here are some of the signs you should call an electrician to inspect your wiring.

When to Call an Electrician About Your Light Switches

1. Sparks

Inside a light switch are contacts that connect to let electricity flow through and turn fixtures on. These disconnect when you flip the switch off, halting the current. It's normal for a small amount of energy to arc between these points as they come together or separate, but if this produces a scorch mark or smell, it may be a fire hazard.

2. Delays

Electrical RepairIf the light doesn't come on when you flip the switch but recovers after a second or two, or if it flickers when you first turn it on, the contacts inside the switch may be worn out or misaligned. In this case, the switch should be replaced to prevent an electrical fire.

3. Sounds

A small click or pop when the switch is flipped may accompany a minor spark, which doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem. However, if it's loud, unusual for that switch, comes with other warning signs like a scorched smell, or accompanies a change in the switch's operation, your wiring or contacts may be damaged. Call a professional for electrical repairs, which will eliminate the noise and mitigate your fire risk.

4. Buzzing

If you hear or feel buzzing in the switch or switch plate, you require emergency electrical repairs. This means the electrical current is traveling incorrectly, which can cause electric shock or fire.

5. Changes

You know the light switches in your home, so you're the best person to notice changes in sound, appearance, or feel of a device when you flip it. Differences aren't always a cause for concern, but if they stand out to you or continue, trust your instinct and call an electrician. They’ll be able to identify whether there’s a hazard in your home, and it’s always best to be safe than sorry.
