If you’re going through a divorce, negotiating a settlement with your spouse is almost always better than going to court. When you and your spouse are committed to resolving your issues peacefully, mediation can be an excellent option, allowing you to work out an agreement between yourselves. Collecting the following documents before meeting a mediator attorney will help you get the most out of the process.

3 Documents to Bring to Your First Session With a Mediator Attorney

1. Asset Statements

Dividing the financial assets starts with having a complete picture of all your resources. Before the first appointment, collect statements from all of your checking, savings, and investment accounts, as well as any retirement funds. You’ll also need a list of all your valuable belongings, including jewelry, vehicles, and electronics.

2. Debt Statements

Your mediator attorney will need to see statements for all your credit cards, personal loans, auto loans, and your mortgage. You should also collect statements for both spouse’s student loans, along with information about any pending lawsuits.

3. Tax Information

In many divorces, spouses also split the tax deductions and credits, so bring copies of your returns for the previous three years. If either spouse owns a business, also find copies of the corporate tax returns for the same period.

4. Marriage Documents

In addition to your financial information, you’ll also need the marriage certificate, trust documents, and copies of your wills. If you and your spouse signed a prenuptial agreement before marriage, bring a copy of the contract to the first meeting with the divorce mediator.
