Getting braces for uneven teeth is only one step in your journey to proper oral healthcare.

Keeping your teeth clean after the placement of oral hardware will take a bit more effort than you may be used to. Orthodontists and Dentists agree; the key to a healthy smile is to utilize effective methods for brushing your teeth and braces.

While it may involve a few more steps the effort is well worth it; who wants to skimp on their oral care after such an important orthodontic treatment?

A few simple updates to your regular brushing-routine will keep your braces clean and reduce the risk of plaque build-up and tooth decay.

The 5 Steps of Brushing With Braces

  1. Remove Extra Fittings

Braces can come equipped with some removable parts. Make sure to take out any unnecessary pieces that aren’t effected by your brushing, including bands, expanders, springs and any other bits that you can remove and clean separately.

  1. Clean Braces First

It isn’t necessary to use any specific brand of toothpaste when cleaning your braces; any toothpaste that contains fluoride will do. Make sure to give your braces a thorough cleaning by brushing around the pins and wires carefully to remove any food particles and debris. Brush the top and bottom surfaces carefully for a thorough clean.

  1. Brush the Wires

The wires holding your braces together also need a complete cleaning. For the best results, move from the top to the bottom before making your way around your upper and lower teeth.

  1. Don’t Forget Your Teeth!

Whether using an electric toothbrush or manual, Dentists recommend spending a few minutes brushing your teeth at least two times a day. This amount of time will allow you to clean each section of your mouth. Use a variety of motions while holding your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle for optimal results.

  1. Rinse and Inspect

After your brushing is complete, make sure to rinse thoroughly by swishing the water around in your mouth. Have a mirror handy to check your braces and teeth for any leftover food particles and debris before finishing up.
