Male and female bodies differ — a fact healthcare providers of all kinds take into account to provide top-quality care. Even dentists recognize the unique oral health challenges that affect women. Mother's Day, May 12, kicks off National Women's Health Week, making it the perfect opportunity to discover the unique considerations of ladies’ dental health.

Dental Health Concerns for Women

1. Menstruation

The upswing in hormones that comes with menstruation can also lead to swollen gums. Women may notice their gums bleeding after flossing in the first three to four days of their period — or even experience some pain from swelling. They are also at greater risk of developing canker sores during this time. These symptoms should subside after the period ends.

2. Pregnancydentist

The female hormones estrogen and progesterone increase blood flow to the tissues, including gums. This makes women more susceptible to gum disease, as the tissues are more likely to become inflamed in response to plaque and bacteria. This is especially true during pregnancy when the body produces even more hormones than usual. During pregnancy, schedule regular dentist appointments in addition to checkups with your doctor.

3. Menopause

The decrease in hormones that comes with menopause affects the salivary gland. Saliva acts as a natural cleansing agent, washing away debris, and also balances the mouth’s pH levels. An overly acidic pH damages the protective enamel coating teeth; dry mouth thus increases the risk of cavities. Meanwhile, a lack of estrogen decreases bone density. Bone loss in the jaw can lead to tooth loss.
