For many kids, summer is the time of year they look forward to most — school is out, and they can finally spend more time outside. However, this season comes with unique health concerns. Schedule preventative care for your child and be on the lookout for these illnesses.

Potential Summertime Health Issues

1. Mosquito- & Tick-Borne Illnesses

Insect bites produce itchy and irritating bumps and can also cause serious health problems. Encephalitis and the West Nile virus are among the diseases carried by some mosquitoes, and Lyme disease is one of the more serious illnesses transmitted by ticks. To reduce the chances of a bite, use chemical repellents, wear light-colored protective clothing, and tuck the legs of pants into socks.

2. Food Poisoningpreventative care

When uncooked foods are left unrefrigerated, it only takes two hours for them to start to spoil. This is especially a concern in the summer, when cookouts, barbecues, and picnics are more common. To minimize the likelihood of food poisoning, keep all foods in a refrigerator or cooler until just before serving time. Also, keep dishes covered with lids or plastic wrap at all times.

3. Swimmer's Ear

This is an infection of the outer ear canal most often caused by water remaining in the ear after swimming. For preventative care, always wear earplugs in the water, shake the head and dry ears thoroughly after swimming, and practice good ear hygiene by cleaning out ears regularly.

4. Heat-Related Issues

The human body sweats to keep cool, but, during the summer when temperatures are naturally higher, the body cannot always keep up with the increase in heat. This can lead to problems like heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstrokes. Preventative care is crucial, so ensure your child takes frequent breaks in a cool area; stays well-hydrated; and wears loose, light-colored clothing. If you notice signs of heatstroke, such as major headache, weakness, confusion, or loss of consciousness, seek medical attention immediately; this is a health care emergency.
