During a root canal treatment, the damaged or infected root of a tooth is removed. Proper aftercare is necessary to maintain the health of the mouth and to minimize pain and discomfort. Here are some essential guidelines to bear in mind after a root canal.

Do:

Take all medications as prescribed.

root canalYour dentist may prescribe antibiotics after a root canal to reduce the chances of an infection. Be sure to finish the complete course of antibiotics, even if pain has subsided and the area is healing normally. Also, if you are prescribed pain medication, take it exactly as directed. Don't take any more than the directions indicate, and never take it with alcohol.

Be aware of side effects.

Some pain and swelling are to be expected after a root canal. But, if pain, swelling, or pressure is still severe a few days after the procedure, let your dentist know. If any of the prescribed medications produce an allergic reaction — such as itchiness or rash — seek prompt medical attention. Other side effects to report to your dentist include an uneven bite or the loss of the temporary crown.

Don't:

Return to a normal diet right away.

Your mouth will be extremely sensitive after a root canal. For the first few days, stick to soft foods that are neither too hot nor too cold, such as room-temperature puddings, Jell-O, and warm soups. Sodas and alcohol can be irritating, so avoid these until the mouth has totally healed.

Neglect oral care.

Follow your dentist's oral care recommendations for the days immediately following the procedure. Rinsing with warm salt water can help kill bacteria around the treated area and keep pain levels down. Brush the teeth gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush and light, even strokes.
