Dental X-rays are comprehensive images of the interior structures of the mouth. These images allow dentists to assess your oral health, identify existing issues, and monitor potential problems. To better understand this crucial diagnostic procedure, here are answers to a few common questions about dental X-rays.

What You Need to Know About Dental X-Rays

What dental conditions can be seen on an X-ray?

Anything that is not visible to the naked eye during a routine dental exam can often be detected on an X-ray. Tooth decay—especially in smaller areas that are concealed between teeth—is visible on X-rays. Bone changes or loss, infections in the root canal, and abscesses are also typically seen on an X-ray. X-rays can be used to help in the placement and preparation of dental implants, dentures, and braces as well.

How often should I get dental X-rays?

dentalFor most people, annual X-rays are sufficient. If you have a new dental issue or one your dentist wants to monitor, more frequent X-rays may be necessary. When seeing a new dentist for the first time, they will almost always want to get an X-ray to obtain a clearer picture of your oral health.

Are X-rays dangerous?

Traditional X-rays use a small amount of radiation, but the exposure levels are so minimal that they are considered safe for adults and children alike. Digital X-rays have an even lower exposure risk. Even small amounts of radiation, however, are not safe for developing fetuses, so if you're pregnant, let the dentist know.

What happens during the X-ray procedure?

The dentist or hygienist will place a protective bib over your chest. They will then position the camera at various points around the mouth. The camera will be moved around frequently, and you will likely be asked to bite down on a paper tab for certain kinds of X-rays. The procedure is painless, and it only takes a few seconds to capture the images.
