When an individual passes in spring or summer, it’s common for burial or funeral services to take place outdoors. While outdoor settings can be beautiful and spiritual, allowing friends and family to celebrate fond memories and say their goodbyes, it’s important to think about your attire and how to stay comfortable. With this in mind, here are a few tips to embrace when attending an outdoor funeral on a hot day.

3 Recommendations When Attending a Summer Funeral

1. Choose Modest Yet Lightweight Attire

FuneralBlack is the traditional color to wear to a funeral service. On a hot summer day, this color can lead to discomfort since it translates heat more than lighter shades. To remain comfortable, lean toward lightweight fabrics. Women should stick to modest cuts that aren’t overly revealing; however, it’s appropriate to eliminate tights, long sleeves, and floor-length hemlines for a summer funeral. Men should also lean toward suits in lighter fabrics. Wearing a short-sleeved button-down with your suit, or leaving your suit jacket off until the service begins can also help you stay cool.

2. Stay Hydrated

The combination of black attire, sweating in the hot sun, and shedding tears can cause dehydration. To avoid feeling faint, light-headed, or low energy, drink plenty of water before leaving for the funeral home and bring along a bottle of water in your suit pocket or purse.

3. Embrace Sun Protection & Portable Fans

In addition to drinking water as needed, plan ahead by applying sunblock to any exposed skin. Consider wearing a formal hat and sunglasses to an outdoor funeral and removing these accessories when appropriate. If the air is thick and still as you wait for the funeral service to begin, use the program to fan yourself. Bringing along a handheld fan or a portable, battery-operated version is also acceptable to stay comfortable; however, refrain from using your devices if they are loud and disruptive during the ceremony itself.
