Cement and concrete are two of the most commonly used materials in construction projects. Although many people use the two terms interchangeably, there are marked differences between the two substances. Understanding what separates concrete from cement can help you decide which building material is better for your next construction project.

Cement

Cement is a binder that is used in various construction jobs; the most common type is Portland. It’s created by instigating a chemical combination of various compounds. The most commonly used ingredients include calcium, silicon, aluminum. The materials are crushed to 3 inches or smaller and are then fed into a cement kiln.

This process gives it the unique adhesive properties but leaves it lacking in durability when compared to other building materials, which is why it’s not used as often as concrete. Typically, cement is used for smaller jobs like grouting and masonry to create a watertight seal and protect a structure from the elements.

Concrete

ConcreteOne of the reasons both materials are often confused is because concrete contains cement. It’s made by combining fine and coarse aggregates using a combination of Portland cement and water. As this paste coats the small and large aggregates, the mixture undergoes a chemical reaction called hydration that hardens the material, giving it the strength and durability that makes it desirable.

Whether it’s a residential concrete mix or commercial, its usage varies widely. From driveways to sidewalks and parking lots, this material serves as a foundation outdoor ground structures. It maintains its structural integrity much better than cement.
