An oil change is one of the most important tasks involved in auto maintenance. Oil lubricates the moving metal parts of the engine, so they can rub against each other without creating friction that would overheat the car. The following guide lists signs that indicate it’s time to take your vehicle in for a routine oil change.

How to Determine When Your Car Needs an Oil Change

1. Check Engine Light Is On

The ‘oil change’ or ‘check engine’ light is the most obvious sign that it’s time for an oil change. If your vehicle is equipped with an ‘oil change’ light, this will turn on when it’s time for a routine change. However, if the ‘check engine’ light is on, this could mean that the engine is already at risk of suffering damage due to dirty or low oil.

2. Dirty Oil

oil changeMotorists should inspect their oil once a month to determine when it’s time for a change. Remove the dipstick from the engine, wipe it off, then push it back in. Take the dipstick out once more to check the color and level of the oil. Fresh oil is the color amber — if the color is dark brown or black, the oil is dirty and must be changed. If it’s below the minimum mark, there’s not enough oil in the reservoir, and more should be added.

3. Loud Engine Noise

Loud noises, such as knocking or rumbling, are a tell-tale sign of dirty or low oil. Without sufficient lubrication, the metal parts within the engine will create loud noises due to the constant friction and damage. The oil must be changed right away to prevent the engine from overheating and breaking down.
