If you use your outdoor hose often during the summer, it’s important to inspect the hose bibb—the outdoor faucet to which you connect your garden hose—for leaks and repair them quickly. Joe Klosterman Plumbing, a Cincinnati, OH, plumbing company owned and operated by the Klosterman family for over 25 years, offers these plumbing repair tips for leaky hose bibbs:

  • Grab a wrench. Often, a leaky hose bibb can be fixed by tightening the nut under the spigot with a wrench. If the leak stops, problem solved.
  • Replace the spigot, if necessary. If a simple tightening of the nut doesn’t work, then it might be time to replace the spigot. To do this, you need to match up the copper, steel, or plastic materials of the pipe and faucet to ensure a proper fit. If you are unsure of what materials you need, contact the friendly staff at Joe Klosterman Plumbing, many of whom have been long-time employees.
  • Always inspect pipes after the winter. If you turn off the water to the outside hose during the colder months, then you won’t have to worry about pipes freezing. But if you leave the water supply on, be sure to check your basement pipes before using your garden hose for the first time. If there’s a cracked pipe, then you are at risk for a flood in your basement whenever you use the hose.
