A hysterectomy is a procedure in which a doctor removes the uterus. While it is often a last-resort treatment option, it can be beneficial for women with certain conditions. While it’s always essential to discuss your treatment options with your OB-GYN, the following are just some of the cases when they may recommend a hysterectomy.

When Would You Benefit From a Hysterectomy?

1. Uterine Fibroids

hysterectomyUterine fibroids are benign masses that grow in the uterus, causing symptoms like pain, heavy bleeding during menstruation, and cramping. Your OB-GYN may first recommend a myomectomy to remove the fibroids from the uterus. However, if that surgery and other treatments do not control the growth of the fibroids, a hysterectomy may be the best option to provide relief.

2. Cancer

In some cases, your OB-GYN may recommend a hysterectomy to treat uterine, ovarian, cervical, or endometrial cancer. However, chemotherapy and radiation may also be used, depending on the nature of your cancer. Some women will have an elective hysterectomy if they have the BRCA gene, since they may have an increased risk for ovarian cancer.

3. PID Complications

Pelvic inflammatory disease — PID — is caused by an infection in the reproductive organs. Doctors can generally treat PID with antibiotics. However, this infection can damage the uterus, fallopian tubes, and other organs if left untreated. In more severe cases, removal of the infected areas may be necessary.

4. Uterine Prolapse

This condition occurs when the tissues holding the uterus in place weaken, causing the uterus to drop into the vagina. Uterine prolapse is more common in women who have recently given birth or have had multiple births. Once a doctor diagnoses a prolapse, they may treat it with minimally invasive surgery or recommend pelvic-strengthening exercises. If other techniques do not work, a hysterectomy may be the best option.
