Chemical face peels are non-invasive treatments used to enhance the skin’s appearance. While each peel is different, many address redness, fine lines, or age spots by exfoliating and gently peeling away older layers of the skin. The result is a more vibrant, radiant appearance. This new skin is a bit more vulnerable to damage, so it’s critical to care for it properly. Discover the do’s and don’ts of proper peel aftercare below.

Do:

Wear sunblock.

Your skin care specialist will likely apply sunscreen at the end of your chemical face peel to protect your rejuvenated skin from harmful UV rays. You should also continue to wear a product with SPF of 30 or more to minimize sun damage, especially in the days directly following your peel.

Keep skin hydrated.

Ask your skin care specialist which product will be best for your skin type, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Don’t:

Exfoliate right away.

A chemical face peel incorporates exfoliation, so you won’t need to scrub your skin for a while. Your skin is in a delicate state following the peel, so wait until at least four days have passed before using a scrub or soft brush to slough away any remaining dead skin cells.

Pick or pull at your skin.

If your specialist performed any extractions, allow your skin to heal fully and resist the urge to pick at any peeling or loose skin. These will mend on their own, and interfering with results could lead to discoloration or a lengthier healing process.
