Depending on the severity of the storm, there can be something peaceful about listening to the roll of thunder amidst the rhythmic droplets of rain outside. However, when those raindrops aren’t staying outside and are somehow getting in through your window, it’s significantly less peaceful.

There are a lot of different ways that water can get in through your windows, and the problem may not always be readily identifiable. If the storm is still raging outside, you’ll need to take some precautions to prevent water damage until you can get a window contractor out to fix the issue. Here’s what you can do in the meantime.

3 Ways to Control a Leak Until a Window Contractor Can Help

1. Damage Control

As soon as you notice the leak, you’ll need to start cleaning up as much of the water as you can. Once the storm has died down, grab some towels and sop up the water to prevent damage to your walls and floors. Place a dry towel in the area where the water is collecting to absorb the water as it continues to come in. Depending on the nature of the leak, it may also be helpful to place a bucket under the window to catch dripping water.

2. Try to Locate the Leak

Perform a quick visual inspection of the window to find the source of the leak. If the leak is coming from the frame or the area where the sash and the frame meet, it’s likely a problem with the window. If you notice water above or below the window or on the walls around it, it may indicate a leak in the drywall.

3. Make Some Temporary Repairs

Duct tape can also work, but it’s more likely to leave behind residue. Either of these will help to keep water out until a window contractor can repair it.
