While the warm season means more time outdoors, it can also lead to higher utility bills. Running your air conditioning during the warm season can be expensive if you don’t properly maintain the system. Below, are a few tips to stay cool without draining your bank account.

A Guide to Reducing Your Cooling Bills

1. Install a Smart Thermostat

These allow you to program your air conditioning to run at the ideal temperature, and you can schedule the system to turn off when you aren’t home. Additionally, you can program the system to increase the temperature while you’re sleeping. Conveniently, this can all be done from your smartphone.

2. Maintain the System

Change the air filters every few months, and if you have people with severe allergies or pets in the house, do so every two months. This will keep your system operating efficiently and maintain the indoor air quality. Additionally, unless you have a ductless air conditioning system, have a professional clean and disinfect the ductwork and system of debris. Also have a proffessional clean the outdoor unit and verify it is operating at peak efficiency.

3. Put the Thermostat on the Correct Wall

Make sure you place the thermostat on a good spot of the wall where the sun does not shine on it, allowing it to properly monitor room temperature.  Make sure its not near an appliance or light that emits heat, not allowing it to measure room temperature correctly, causing it to work harder than it needs to. Also, install it in a room where you relax like the living room.
