You rely on your air conditioning system to keep your home comfortable during the warm season, so it’s crucial for it to work reliably and efficiently. With some basic AC maintenance, your system will stay in good shape. Here are a few tips to get started.

A Guide to Air Conditioning Maintenance

1. Care for the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit often gets dirty easily, which restricts airflow and makes the system less efficient. Remove any debris that’s within one foot of the the AC components. Clean off the fins by vacuuming them or hosing them down. If you have pets or children that could go near it, install a fence around it to keep them at a safe distance.

2. Change the Air Filter

The air filter’s job is to remove allergens, dust, and other airborne particles that could reduce your indoor air quality. To keep it functioning optimally, replace it every 30 to 90 days. In some systems, you can find the filter near the air ducts. In others, it’s located near the blower system. When changing it, make sure the power is off and that the arrow on the filter’s frame is facing the air handler.

3. Check for Puddles

Clogged drain tubes are common. If you see water puddling around the unit, the drain line likely has a clog. Have a professional use a specialized wire brush or a wet/dry vacuum to remove any debris. They’ll clean out the line to kill off any bacteria or mold, allowing the system to drain properly.
