Whether it’s your tractor or car, a vehicle is only as reliable as its tires. Blowouts, skidding, and poor gas mileage are all common consequences of having old treads. With this in mind, the guide below explains how to know yours are wearing out.

When Is It Time to Invest in New Tires?

1. Balding Tread

The tread is essential to maintaining traction on the road. As you put more miles on your car or tractor, the rubber wears down to a smooth surface. This is called balding and means the tires should be replaced. Uneven wear is also dangerous as it can cause your vehicle to be unbalanced—and in addition to getting new tires, you should also get your vehicle realigned to prevent the same problem from reoccurring.

2. Damaged Sidewall

tiresThe sidewall is a part of the tire that can never be repaired. Any damage to this area will eventually result in a blowout. Damage may occur over time from wear, such as cracking from the elements. If the wheels haven’t been properly aligned, this wear will occur more quickly than it should. It may also be gouged suddenly by sharp items.

3. Shaky Ride

It’s not uncommon to experience a shaky ride when you’re on an unpaved or poorly maintained road. However, your vehicle should not shake or bounce on paved roads. This may be the result of a problem on the interior of the tire, which a visual inspection will not warn you of.
