During your cataract surgery, your doctor will remove the lens of the eye and replace it with an artificial one. This common procedure is generally quick, and you can expect a speedy recovery. However, it’s important to take some steps so that you recover as smooth as possible. Here are some basic care tips following your cataract surgery.

How Can You Best Recover After Cataract Surgery?

1. Plan

You’ll remain in the facility until the sedation wears off, and the staff gives you the green light to leave. Since you won’t be able to drive after eye surgery, arrange a ride home from the office. Be sure to clear your schedule for the rest of the day, and you might want to prepare meals before the procedure so that you can focus on recovering.

2. Make Time to Rest

cataract surgeryYour doctor will tell you how much time you should plan to rest, but it’s generally best to cancel all activities for the 24 hours after surgery. While you likely won’t be in pain, you may feel some discomfort. As you rest at home, refrain from rubbing your eye and wear an eye shield if instructed.

3. Avoid Swimming

One of the most important parts of protecting your eyes from recovery is avoiding contact with harmful substances that could cause an infection. Since water can carry bacteria, it’s best to avoid swimming for about a week. This recommendation also applies to baths and hot tubs. Your doctor will instruct you on how long you should keep out of the water and what activities could harm your recovery.

4. Attend Your Follow-Up

Your doctor will want to see you shortly after your cataract surgery to check in on you’re healing and discuss possible medications. This appointment will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions about your recovery and procedure outcomes. Call your doctor immediately if you experience worsening sight and pain, light flashes, consistent swelling, increased redness, or vision loss.
