If you have outdated heating and cooling equipment, investing in upgrades will lead to considerable energy savings. Apart from age, how you use and care for the HVAC system contributes to its efficiency. To make sure the system operates at peak performance, here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow.

Do:

Change the filters regularly.

If airflow is restricted, heating and cooling equipment has to work harder and drain more energy to maintain a comfortable climate. This is often the case when the air filter is covered in pet dander, pollen, and additional contaminants. To reduce strain on components, check the filter each month and change it at least every three months—or more frequently if you have pets or experience allergies.

Use a programmable thermostat.

heating and coolingTo save energy, you might adjust the thermostat too high or low or turn off the equipment during off-peak hours when no one is home. This actually makes the system work harder to reach the desired temperature when everyone is home. Instead, install a programmable thermostat, as you can set it to make minor adjustments throughout the day, which requires less energy.

Don’t:

Forget annual maintenance checks.

To remain in good condition, heating and cooling equipment needs regular maintenance. Each year, you should schedule a heating system check before temperatures drop and air conditioning maintenance before the weather gets warmer. A trained technician will lubricate and clean components, fix faulty electrical connections, calibrate thermostats, and provide additional services to enhance system efficiency.

Ignore signs of distress.

If you suspect there’s a problem, don’t wait until the annual maintenance check to address the issue. Clanking noises, for example, could indicate an internal component is loose or damaged. A foul smell when you turn on the AC could point to mold growth in the ducts or on other damp components. Failing to act quickly could lead to more damage.
