Whether you own a construction company or manage inventory in a warehouse, a forklift is likely one of your most-used pieces of heavy equipment. Even though it’s designed for durability, consistent use will always cause wear and tear. Here are several problems you may experience over your forklift’s life span.

3 Signs Your Forklift Needs Repairs

1. Non-Responsive Starter

If your forklift isn’t turning on, and the battery is in working condition, a mechanic will check for depleted coolant levels and radiator blockages. These issues can cause the engine to overheat and turn off. While these problems are common and easily diagnosed, others, like a corroded radiator, will require a trained eye to identify and repair.

2. Old or Damaged Tires

heavy equipmentLike your vehicle, the rubber on heavy equipment tires eventually wears away. As it does, the operator absorbs more shock. Extended wear and tear also put additional strain on other auto parts, including the wheel bearings and brakes. To avoid serious accidents or long-term employee injuries, have a qualified mechanic replace the tires that have less than one inch of tread between the top and the lettering on the side. They should also replace it if it’s cracked, torn, or chunking.

3. Depleted Fluid

Proper hydraulic fluid levels are critical to the successful operation of heavy equipment. If your machine struggles to raise and lower the fork or grinds as it moves, it may be a sign your fluid is low. If your fluids are topped off, you might have a cracked or rusted chain that needs replacement.
