If you live in North Carolina and own a vehicle or are considering buying one, you must adhere to the state’s guidelines for vehicle safety and emissions. Period emission tests depend on certain factors, while an annual safety inspection performed by a certified auto mechanic is an overall requirement. Since you won’t be able to register your car unless you comply, understanding what’s expected of you will ensure you don’t run into issues. Here’s a guide to help you meet NC state regulations.

Vehicle Safety Inspections

Every year, your vehicle must pass a safety inspection. This must be done within 90 days of the expiration of your registration. If you just purchased a new car from a dealership, you can skip the first inspection before registering the vehicle.

Auto MechanicDuring an inspection, an auto mechanic will test everything from major systems to small details that could become problematic on the road later. For example, they’ll check that the parking brake, brake lines, and parking cables are operational. If your car is pre-owned, they’ll ensure the tire treads are deep enough and show no damage. For windows and windshields, they’ll verify that the tinting transmits at least 32% of light to allow enough visibility.

You can have your vehicle inspected at one of the 7,500+ inspection stations throughout the state, or take it to an auto mechanic of your choice who is certified to perform state safety inspections

Emissions Tests

Carbon emission tests check the amount of pollutants produced by your vehicle. This is a requirement for cars registered in 22 North Carolina counties. These are typically performed during safety inspections.

You may be exempt from emissions testing if your vehicle is less than three years old or has fewer than 70,000 miles on it. If it’s registered as farm equipment, runs on diesel, or was manufactured before 1995, it may also be an exception.
