School is almost out for the summer, and you might be busy making plans to move or travel. If you are going away for a month or more, it makes sense to put certain items in secure storage rather than haul around with you. Check out this list to make moving easier and more streamlined when you return in the fall.

What to Place in Secure Storage Over Summer

1. Winter Clothes

Unless you are headed to the Arctic, there’s no reason to tote heavy and bulky winter clothes around. Pack sweaters, boots, long underwear, and outerwear in clean, dry boxes and leave them in storage.

2. Sports Equipment

Think carefully about what items you will use over the summer. Seasonal sports equipment such as skis, snowboards, and snowshoes are obvious items to place in secure storage. Any bulky things you won’t have time to play with, like lacrosse or hockey sticks, are better off in storage than in your car.

3. Furniture

Although many college students may give away or sell furniture if they are moving, it makes better financial sense to store items like beds, futons, and a comfy couch rather than have to replace them. Short-term secure storage will likely be less money than re-purchasing items.

4. School Supplies

5. Household Items

Pots, pans, dishes, and cutlery are all items that can be easily stored; like furniture, they may be expensive to replace. Opt to keep what you have and store it for the next school year. Include extra towels and bedding, favorite artwork, and decor items as well.
