Pregnancy is an exciting time for any woman: You’re preparing to welcome a new life into the world. It also has its uncomfortable aspects, however, from morning sickness to back pain. Hot summer weather brings added challenges to pregnancy. Discuss any unusual discomfort or fatigue with you OB-GYN, but in the meantime, try these tips to stay cool.

5 Ways to Stay Comfortable During a Summer Pregnancy

1. Keep Feet Elevated

Swollen feet, ankles, and legs are a common side effect of pregnancy at any time of year. Your body is retaining fluid, and gravity is bringing that fluid down to the lower parts of your body. Fight back by keeping feet elevated when sitting or lying down.

2. Take a Dip

Water-based activities are also a great way to exercise while pregnant: The buoyancy of the water takes the added weight and pressure off your joints. While a quick dip should be fine, ask your OB-GYN about safely exercising if you plan to start swimming laps.

3. Wear Light Clothing

Steer clear of synthetic, body-hugging fabrics. They will contain heat and leave you even warmer. Instead opt for cotton materials in loose, flowing cuts. Empire-waist blouses and maxi dresses are ideal.

4. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can leave you feeling faint and woozy. If the hot weather is making you sweaty, the risk is even greater, so drink plenty of water. For pregnant women, try to drink about ten cups per day.

5. Indulge in Naps

Pregnancy alone will leave you feeling tired thanks to the hormonal changes. Hot weather will exacerbate your sleepiness. Don’t hesitate to take a nap when needed; you deserve to rest.
