Mold and mildew are common in almost any climate and grow when your AC system has too much moisture on the various components. They can cause serious health issues like asthma, so it’s important to keep your HVAC system properly maintained to prevent mold from collecting in the ducts.

Mold & Your HVAC System

Signs of Mold

Mold can cause health issues, from sneezing and congestion to headaches, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Look for visible signs of mold around air ducts or vents, a musty odor, or pooling water from condensed moisture in the HVAC system.

The Causes

HVAC systemMold grows when warm air turns into vapor in the ducts. It collects as cold air passes through. If humidity levels are high enough, water won’t evaporate but will remain there. As dust infiltrates your ductwork, it feeds the mold and allows it to proliferate throughout the system. Mold spores will then spread into your home via the air blown by the air conditioner.

How to Prevent Mold

Change the Filters Regularly

The first step in preventing mold in your HVAC system is to upgrade to HEPA® filters. These mesh filters are very fine, allowing air to flow through while trapping mold spores, dust, and other allergens. Air filters should be cleaned or replaced every 30-60 days, depending on your climate. If you have pets or smokers in the home, you should change them more often.

Get Professional Cleanings & Maintenance

Have your system inspected twice a year. Spring and fall are ideal times to have all the components checked, filters cleaned and replaced, and any trouble spots repaired. Professional duct cleaning will remove dust, mold, mildew, and other contaminants. This should be done every two to three years.
