Tires are among the most commonly changed components in a vehicle. Replacing them with a new set can be expensive, however. Additionally, motorists are driving less frequently during the pandemic, so new tires will sit on your driveway, deteriorating over time. As a result, opting for used tires will save you more money than ever. Use this guide to find the best set that will keep you on the road longer.

What to Look for When Shopping for Used Tires

1. Know the Age

Steer clear of used tires that are more than five or six years old, even if they seem to be in good condition. Old tires are more susceptible to failing while driving. Check the tire’s age through the tire identification number stamped on the sidewall. The approximate date of manufacture — typically four digits — is often found after the letters “DOT” and the production location. The first two numbers refer to the week while the last two digits pertain to the year of manufacture. For instance, a code of 0917 means the tire was produced in the ninth week of 2017.

2. Check Tread Depth & Wear

used tiresCheck how deep the tread grooves are by performing the penny test. Insert a penny between the tread blocks to estimate the depth — if you see the top of Lincoln’s head, the depth is around 2/32 of an inch and considered worn out. Alternatively, pick up a tire depth gauge to accurately determine the remaining tread life. Choose used tires that have even wear and at least 4/32 of an inch of tread.

3. Take a Closer Look

Pay close attention to surface and sidewall defects like bubbles, bumps, patches, holes, tears, and cracks. Watch out for exposed belts and steel cords, along with signs of damage around the bead area and on the liner. These are signs the tire isn’t structurally sound and could blow out while you’re on the road.
