There are many hair removal methods out there, each with its own benefits. Using different ingredients, sugaring and waxing are two of the most popular ways to remove body hair. Before you head to the spa, know the differences between these treatments to help you choose what service works best for you.

Comparing Sugaring & Waxing

How They Work

spaOriginating in Persia, sugaring uses water, lemon, and sugar. The mixture is heated until it melts into a warm paste, which is cooled down before application. It’s applied to the area, then ripped off to pull the hair out at the roots.

Waxing, on the other hand, uses materials made from tree by-products and resins. Wax is applied warm, then pulled off quickly to remove the hair from its root. Hard wax can be gripped directly, while soft wax will need to be placed on a strip for application.

What to Expect

The effects of sugaring usually last for around two weeks before your hair starts to grow back. Hair must be at least a quarter inch long before you can visit a spa to have it done again. Unlike wax, the sugaring mixture grabs only onto the hair and not the skin, which can help those who experience discomfort during waxing.

Waxing also lasts for about two weeks, and you’ll need to wait the same amount of time before heading back to the spa. However, waxing takes less time than sugaring, since the mixture is already warm when applied to your skin and you don’t need to wait for it to cool off. After treatment, your skin may be slightly red or irritated, but this is temporary and will fade in the coming hours.
