Does yucky wet leaves, ladders, creepy crawlies and maybe even a plant or two growing in the gutter make you do an about face?

Well before you grab your gloves, ladder, tools and bucket, here’s a few things to know.

Gutters serve a vital purpose by preventing water damage around your home.  Gutters are mostly out of sight, but should not be out of mind because gutters can become clogged.

Leaves, dirt and debris can block the path of water from freely draining to the down spout.  Blockages force the water another way which could be down the walls of your house.  This could lead to wood rot and water infiltration.

We recommend inspecting the gutters yearly or more frequently if you have trees above the roof line, and of course after any major storms.  After the gutters are cleaned, inspect for separated joints and leaks.  Don’t over look the down spouts, flush them out with a garden hose.

Check to see where the water comes out, is it being directed away from the house or pooling at the foundation or worse.   Use a splash block to quickly direct the water away from the house and into a garden or down the driveway.
