If you’ve never been to a Japanese restaurant or sushi bar before, the concept of eating raw fish may be foreign to you. Although you’re certainly allowed to consume this cuisine however you choose, there are a few traditions and habits that are observed during most traditional sushi meals. Follow these tips to help you enjoy an authentic meal during your next trip to a sushi bar.

How to Properly Eat Dishes From a Sushi Bar

1. Use Fingers & Chopsticks

If you’re not a pro at using chopsticks, don’t panic. The traditional method for eating sushi is to pick it up with your fingers and eat it with one bite. However, chopsticks are also acceptable, and are usually preferred when eating sashimi. Most Japanese restaurants will give you a fork and knife if you request, but this is not the traditional method for consuming this dish.

2. Enjoy Mild Flavors First

However, it might be more enjoyable for you if you select the types of fish with mild flavors first, and then move onto the more distinct options afterward. This keeps your palette clear so you can enjoy every piece of fish individually. If you’re not sure about the flavors, it’s a safe bet to opt for lighter colored sashimi first, then move onto something in the middle, such as salmon, and finish with something darker and rich, such as tuna.

3. Don’t Mix Sauces

Even if you love both soy sauce and wasabi, try not to mix the two. There’s nothing improper about it, but it takes away from the distinct flavor of each one. Instead, spread a small amount of wasabi on your sushi, then dip the sashimi or fish into the soy sauce. Try to avoid dipping the rice into it, since it will soak up a large amount of sauce.
