Neck pain is an uncomfortable, frustrating condition that can make driving, working, and even sleeping difficult. The good news is that many sources of your discomfort can be eliminated — you just have to reassess some everyday habits. Follow these pointers to get started.

How to Address Neck Pain

1. Adjust Your Technology

When using a computer, position the monitor at eye level. You shouldn’t have to look up or down to comfortably view the screen. If you use a laptop, which will inevitably require you to look down, invest in a monitor to hook it up to, or try using a standing desk so the screen is in a better position. Raise phones or tablets to eye level during use to avoid straining downward.

2. Check Your Sleeping Space

If it’s too high, the neck is forced to stretch upwards; if it’s too low and your head falls, the neck “sags” down. You want your pillow to provide enough support to keep the spine straight. If possible, sleep on your back as this reduces pressure on the spine and neck.

3. Perfect Your Posture

Your neck is connected to the spine as well as surrounding ligaments, muscles, and tendons. When you slouch, you not only force the spine to curve unnaturally, but you also put a strain on these soft tissues. Sit and stand up straight, with your shoulders back and your head up — picture an imaginary thread holding you up from the top of your head. Ditch your briefcase or purse and opt for a backpack to avoid being weighed down unevenly, further combatting bad posture.
