People don’t often think about their chimney’s needs, but a small problem left untreated can lead to some serious consequences. It can become a fire hazard or impact the structural integrity of your home. The following guide looks at some of the signs of trouble so you can arrange for early chimney repair.

When to Schedule Chimney Repair

1. Rust

Check the firebox or damper for rust regularly. The firebox is down below where the fire burns, while the damper is located up at the top of the fireplace or chimney. If they are corroding, it means that moisture is getting into your chimney where it shouldn’t. The solution may be to repair some cracked flue tiles or have the chimney waterproofed.

2. Efflorescence

Efflorescence takes the form of a white stain visible on the side of the chimney—and occurs on stone, concrete, brick, or stucco. It is a deposit of salts left behind by water. You can clean this off, but it will only come back and will eventually make the chimney deteriorate. Masonry contractors will need to repair any badly damaged materials and add waterproofing to keep out moisture in the future.

3. Cracked Joints

Your roofing contractor may notice cracks or deterioration when they are performing an inspection. Given time, these will only worsen and may cause the chimney to eventually collapse. Masonry repair contractors can determine whether the joints can be re-caulked or if more extensive repair is needed.
