Applying weed and feed is an essential part of any spring lawn care plan. The product allows you to kill harmful weeds while also delivering nutrients essential for a healthy lawn. If you want this product to be as effective as possible, apply it at the right time — here’s how.

How to Make the Most of Weed & Feed in Your Lawn Care

Wait Until You See Weeds

For weed killer to work effectively, weeds should be present in your yard at the time of application. Apply it in early spring but wait until you start seeing weeds pop up throughout the lawn.

When applying weed killer, wait until the ground has fully thawed so that the product can penetrate the soil down to the root. Ideally, the temperature should be above freezing for a few weeks, but still less than 80 degrees. The middle of summer is too late. If you miss the window or need to apply more than once, wait until the weather starts to cool down again in fall. Choose a day without precipitation for at least 24 hours. This way, the product won’t get washed away or diluted.

Mow a Few Times After Seeding

For freshly seeded lawns, wait a bit longer than you normally would before applying weed and feed: typically after mowing at least twice. This ensures you’re not applying the product to seeds that are still forming. New seeds and grass plants are more vulnerable to weed killer than established grass.
