Swimming pools are an oasis all summer long. Whether you’re relaxing after a long day at work or spending an afternoon with friends, the water is the place to be. When it comes time to open the pool after winter, though, being unfamiliar with the proper procedure can be a challenge. The following guide will ease any concerns and ensure everything’s in its proper place.

5 Steps to Get Your Pool Ready for Summer

1. Clean off the Cover

Neglecting to clean the pool cover could cause a need for a replacement. Gently sweep off the surface and hose down any areas that have visible stains. Leave it out to dry for a couple of hours before rolling it up and storing it in a safe place.

2. Vacuum out the Pool

3. Top It Off

It’s common for water levels to decrease in the swimming pool after months of disuse. If it seems a little low, hook up the garden hose and stick it over the edge of the pool. Let the water run until the level reaches about halfway to the wall skimmer.

4. Reconnect All Equipment

Those who took the extra step to winterize their pool will need to check each piece of equipment. Reconnect the filter, pump, and heater, then replace the plugs with ones that are meant for regular use. Turn the system on and let it run for a bit to ensure that there are no noticeable issues.

5. Test the Water

If you use pool chemicals to prevent bacteria growth, you’ll have to test the pH, chlorine, calcium hardness, and total alkalinity levels. Purchase a kit from a pool supply company and use it to determine how much to add of each. This should supply all the information you need to get the numbers just right.
