As the weather continues to warm, it’s especially important for your home to have a high-functioning air conditioning system. If your current model is blowing warm air, noisy, or causes you to have high energy bills, it’s probably time for a new air conditioner installation. If you need help choosing one, here’s what you should consider.

A Guide to Purchasing a New Air Conditioner

1. SEER® Rating

SEER® stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio®, and the rating indicates how energy-efficient a unit is. Increased efficiency will mean a lower carbon footprint and reduced energy bills. Government regulations mandate at least a 13 SEER rating for new air conditioner installations; go for one that is rated at least 14.

2. Budget

Set aside funds for the air conditioner installation, as well as annual inspections, regular maintenance, and replacement parts. Also, factor in the energy savings from the new unit. If you invest in an EnergyStar® AC, you may even be eligible for a tax break.

3. Size

To avoid purchasing a unit that is incapable of cooling your entire home or simply too large, consult an AC expert about sizing. They will recommend a size based on your home’s square footage and insulation, as well as your region’s climate. Larger homes with more rooms tend to need larger systems, while houses with strong insulation require smaller units since these homes let out less cool air. If you live in a warmer region, you may need a more powerful system than if you reside in a cooler climate.
