A fallen power line is a hazard. Whether it was struck down by a tree in a storm or by a person driving their car into it, once down, they can ignite fires that can damage property or electrocute passersby. If you encounter one, immediately call emergency responders and the electrical company as soon as possible. In addition, follow the guide below for further safety tips.

How to Deal With a Downed Power Line

1. Don’t Assume That the Line Isn’t Live

Don’t touch the power line—either with your hands or with an object like a pole or a stick. Just because there are no sparks or sounds coming from the wire doesn’t mean it’s not live and dangerous to come in contact with. If you noticed the issue while you were in your car, don’t drive over it either. Once your car comes into contact with it, it may become electrified.

2. Keep Your Distance

3. Wait & Warn Others

Matters like this tend to draw attention from people nearby. Tell them not to approach or to get out of their cars, as the ground may be electrified. Instead, wait for the electrical company to arrive to guide the situation.
